Homemaking Hack: Sourdough Tortillas for Your Pantry & Freezer

One of the best life hacks I’ve discovered for keeping my kitchen running smoothly is bulk prepping pantry and freezer staples that my family loves and uses often. It’s a total game-changer for quick meals and healthier eating! One of my all-time favorite staples to prep in batches? Sourdough tortillas.

Not only are they quick and easy to make, but they also freeze beautifully. We use them for everything—quesadillas, tacos, small burritos, and even as a stand-in for naan when we’re enjoying Indian food. Talk about versatile!

Let me share my go-to recipe so you can stock up your freezer, too:

Sourdough Tortilla Recipe (Yields 8 Tortillas)

Ingredients:

  • 1 2/3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/4 cup olive or avocado oil
  • 1/2 cup sourdough discard
  • 1/3 cup water

Steps:

  1. Combine the wet ingredients (sourdough discard, oil, and water) in a mixing bowl.
  2. Add the flour and salt to the wet mixture.
  3. Mix everything together until it forms a uniform ball. Don’t be afraid to use your hands toward the end!
  4. Let the dough rest for 30 minutes. (If you’re busy, you can throw it in the fridge or freezer until you’re ready to cook.)
  5. Divide the dough into eight equal pieces. You can weigh them if you want precision, but I usually just eyeball it.
  6. Roll each piece into a ball.
  7. On a floured surface, roll each ball into a thin tortilla using a rolling pin. (If the dough keeps shrinking back, keep rolling and flipping—it helps relax the gluten.)
  8. Preheat a pan over medium heat. I use stainless steel, and I know it’s ready when a drop of water dances on the surface instead of evaporating immediately.
  9. Transfer your rolled-out tortilla to the pan. When it starts to bubble, flip it over and wait for the other side to bubble.
  10. Repeat until all the tortillas are cooked.

Freeze & Enjoy

Once they’ve cooled, you can eat them fresh (trust me, they’re irresistible warm!) or pop them into the freezer. I like to double the recipe and make 16 tortillas at a time—it’s such a time saver on busy nights.

Whether you’re meal prepping or just looking for a fun, simple recipe to try, these sourdough tortillas are a must. Give them a go, and let me know how you use them in your meals. Your freezer will thank you! 🥰
