How to Stay Sane in a Busy Life: Homemaking Tips for the Hectic Moments
Let’s be real—life is crazy and hectic. Even when we try not to be busy, life happens! Sometimes the dishes don’t get done, the laundry piles up, and we end up ordering takeout. But there are ways we can prepare ourselves to succeed during those unexpected moments.
1. Grocery Shopping in Bulk
Even though it’s just my husband and me, we always shop in bulk. When I go to the local butcher, I buy enough meat to last 2-3 weeks. We love Costco and purchase essentials like butter, pantry items, toiletries, and hearty vegetables and fruits in bulk. For things like dairy products, eggs, and fresh produce, I fill in with weekly grocery store trips. This way, we always have something in the fridge or pantry ready to cook.
2. Batch Cooking
I try to carve out 2-3 hours on weeknights or weekends for batch cooking our go-to meals. Things like egg bites, tortillas, protein bars, and bagels are simple to make in bulk and freeze. For our family, breakfast and lunch are usually on the go, so having premade snacks and meal items ready means we have healthy, budget-friendly options instead of resorting to fast food. 3. Chores as I Go
One of the best hacks for staying on top of household chores is doing a little as I go. If the laundry hamper is full, I’ll carry it downstairs and throw in a load, even if I’m in a rush. Before I start cooking, I’ll take 5 minutes to unload the dishwasher so I can add dirty dishes as I go. Small tasks like these prevent things from piling up and help free up larger chunks of time for other projects.
4. Taking Time for Sabbath
Taking a Sabbath is a biblical command that reminds us of our humanity. “Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy” (Exodus 20:8). While it can feel impossible to rest for an entire day, remember that rest doesn’t look the same for everyone. It could mean going for a walk in a park you don’t usually visit, having a date night with your spouse, or spending quiet time with the Lord. It’s about recharging and remembering how He sustains us.
By taking these small steps, you can start to see the beauty in homemaking and enjoy everything the Lord has blessed you with, even in the busiest moments.
