Bread in Scripture: Jesus as the Bread of Life
Bread is referenced many times throughout scripture—Matthew 6:11, Matthew 26:26, and Luke 12:1, just to name a few. One of the most powerful verses, though, is John 6:35, where Jesus declares:
"I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst."
Jesus frequently spoke in metaphors, blending the physical and the spiritual to reveal deeper truths. This is a perfect example—He wasn't saying He was literally bread to be eaten, but rather, He was illustrating that true and lasting sustenance is found in Him alone.
Bread as a Symbol of Spiritual Sustenance
In the time and culture Jesus was speaking to, bread was a core dietary staple. It was something people relied on daily to sustain their physical bodies. By calling Himself the Bread of Life, Jesus was showing just how essential He is for our spiritual well-being. Just as we need food for physical life, we need Him for eternal life.
When Jesus says that those who follow Him will never hunger or thirst again, He is again intertwining the physical and the spiritual. While He certainly provides for our needs, this doesn’t mean believers will never experience physical hunger or thirst. Rather, spiritually, He is our Bread of Life and Living Water—our souls will never lack when we are in Him.
Reflecting on the Bread of Life in Our Daily Lives
As someone who bakes bread weekly, I find that the act of making and eating bread can be a beautiful reminder of this truth. Kneading the dough, watching it rise, and sharing it with others mirrors the way Christ nurtures and sustains us.
