The Blessing of Household Chores: Serving God in the Everyday

"So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God." – 1 Corinthians 10:31

I am a born doer. In 7th grade, I ran my first business roasting and selling coffee beans to fund a trip to Costa Rica. In college, I started reselling clothes as a way to stay out of debt and do something flexible around my class schedule. I graduated with honors and was ready to get into the workforce and climb the ladder.

The same year I graduated, my fiancé and I bought a house and then got married six months later. I knew I wanted to fix our home up and learn to cook healthy food, but I had no idea how time-consuming that would be. After we got married and I moved into our home, I was shocked at how little free time we had between both working full-time jobs, trying to cook 5-6 meals a week, keeping up with the never-ending pile of laundry, exercising, and still finding time to be with the Lord and my husband.

As I prayed about how to be a good wife, employee, daughter, and friend, the Lord started to change my heart from seeing household chores as obstacles and burdens to understanding them as acts of worship. I realized what a blessing it is to have ample clothing that we have to do laundry. What a blessing it is to be able to take walks and lift weights. What a blessing it is to afford groceries and get to cook. By reframing my mindset, I was able to see each of these chores as an act of worship and service—both to the Lord and to my husband.

If you're feeling overwhelmed with everything you have to do, take a step back and try to see the blessing in it. Yes, it can be hard. Yes, it can feel never-ending—but what a friend we have in Jesus! He meets us in the hard moments and is well-pleased when our heart posture is one of service to Him and others.
